When Do You Need to Convert OTF to TTF?
Some software still will not install or embed an OpenType .otf file, particularly older design tools, some game engines and a few embroidery and cutting machines. Converting OTF to TTF produces the TrueType file those programs expect.
What Happens When You Convert OTF to TTF
FontForge reads the OpenType font and generates a TrueType one. The meaningful difference between the two is how the glyph outlines are described: OTF normally uses cubic curves and TTF uses quadratic ones, so the outlines are approximated rather than copied. The approximation is close enough that the shapes look the same at normal sizes. What can be affected is OpenType layout features such as ligatures, alternates and small caps, since support for those varies by consuming application once the font is TrueType.
Worth knowing before you convert
Converting changes the file, not the design. A font that was never hinted for small screen sizes behaves the same way afterwards.
About OTF and TTF
font/otf
Scalable computer font format.
font/ttf
TrueType is a font standard developed by Apple and Microsoft. It provides consistent text rendering across devices and operating systems. TTF fonts are widely supported and commonly used for desktop and web typography.
Conversion Notes
Font conversion between OTF and TTF preserves all glyph outlines, kerning pairs, and most OpenType layout features. Hinting data — instructions that improve screen rendering at small sizes — may be recalculated or removed depending on the target format. Advanced features like variable font axes or color font layers are preserved only if the target format supports them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Close but not identical. OTF describes curves with cubic beziers and TTF with quadratic ones, so the outlines are converted rather than copied. The difference is not visible at ordinary text sizes.
