What Happens to Your Image

Every conversion here re-encodes the picture rather than renaming it, so it is worth knowing what changes. Camera metadata is removed by default. That includes the GPS coordinates an iPhone writes into a HEIC, which is the single most common reason a photo should not be posted as it came off the phone. If you need the EXIF block kept, turn off the strip-metadata option before converting.

Transparency survives a move to PNG, WEBP or AVIF and does not survive a move to JPG, because JPEG has no alpha channel. A logo with a see-through background converted to JPG comes back with that background filled in. Go to PNG or WEBP instead and it stays transparent.

JPG output is encoded with mozjpeg at quality 80, which is the setting most people would pick by hand for photographs. WEBP and AVIF hold similar quality in a smaller file and are the better choice for anything going on a web page. PNG stays lossless, so converting a photograph to PNG usually makes the file larger, not smaller.

HEIC is the awkward one. Apple devices shoot it by default and most Windows software, print shops and web forms still will not open it, which is why HEIC to JPG is the busiest conversion on this page. Nothing needs installing to run it.

Passport Photo Guides

Passport photo rules are rejected more often for the head being the wrong size than for anything to do with the background. These cover the measurements each country actually checks, and how to shoot a usable portrait without a studio.
