What Makes a Passport Photo Compliant
Passport and visa authorities share the same core rules, based on the ICAO standard. This tool handles the measurable ones automatically and flags the rest so you can retake if needed.
Dimensions & file size
The output is rendered to the exact pixel size your target authority asks for, and JPEG quality is tuned so the file lands inside the required kilobyte window — down to the 5–100 KB range some portals enforce.
Head size & position
Your face is measured from the tip of the chin to the crown of the head and scaled so it fills 70–80% of the frame (or the percentage your standard requires), then centred. Voluminous hair is kept fully in frame without shrinking the face.
Plain, shadow-free background
The subject is matted out and composited onto a single flat colour (white by default), so the background carries no pattern, no other people or objects, and no shadows — a common rejection reason.
Straight, front-facing pose
Your head should be square to the camera, looking straight ahead so both ears and both cheeks are visible. The tool flags photos where the head looks turned or tilted so you can retake before submitting.
Neutral expression, eyes visible
Eyes open and clearly visible, mouth closed, a neutral expression. Glasses are discouraged and banned outright under ICAO/EU rules; if you wear them, avoid glare and thick frames over the eyes.
Head covering
Hats and head wear are generally not allowed. Religious head coverings are permitted provided the full face is visible from the lower chin to the forehead with no shadows across it.
A recent, sharp likeness
Use a photo no more than six months old so it reflects your current appearance, in sharp focus, evenly lit, with natural skin tones and no red-eye. Only one person may be in the frame.
