Which PDFs Convert Well, and Which Fight Back
A PDF records where each glyph sits on the page. It does not record that a run of glyphs was a heading, or that two blocks were columns. Converting to Word means inferring all of that back, so the result depends almost entirely on how the PDF was made.
Converts cleanly
- PDFs exported from Word or Writer. Single column, real text, ordinary styles. These come back close to the original.
- Reports, letters and contracts. Body text with headings and the odd table.
- Anything where you mainly want the words back. Text recovery is the reliable part.
Expect cleanup
- Multi-column academic papers. Column order has to be guessed, and sometimes it guesses wrong.
- Designed layouts. Brochures and magazines become a pile of text boxes, because that is genuinely what they are.
- Scans. You get an image in a Word file. Recovering text from a scan needs OCR, which this does not do.
- Text drawn as graphics. Logos and charts stay pictures.
If you only need the words and not the layout, PDF to TXT is usually the better tool. It does not try to rebuild formatting it cannot see, so there is nothing to clean up afterwards.
