Will the timing stay exact?

Yes. Timestamps are carried over at millisecond precision — the only change is notation (SRT uses comma decimals, VTT uses dots). If you need to fix subtitles that run early or late, use the time shift option: positive values delay them, negative values bring them forward.

What happens to ASS styling when converting to SRT or VTT?

Fonts, colors, positioning, and karaoke effects are stripped; dialogue text and timing are kept. That is usually the point — YouTube, editing suites, and most players want the plain version. Going the other way, SRT to ASS produces a file with one default style ready for typesetting in Aegisub.

My subtitles show é as Ã© — can this fix it?

If the source file is in a legacy encoding (common for older SRT files), pick the right source encoding in the options — Windows-1252 for Western European, Windows-1251 for Cyrillic, and so on. Output is always UTF-8. If the mojibake was already saved into the text by an earlier tool, no conversion can recover the original characters.

Why does my SRT file not work in my web player?

Browsers only accept WebVTT in the <track> element — an SRT file wired in there fails silently. Convert to VTT and it loads. The formats are near-identical, so nothing is lost.

How does the time shift work?

Every timestamp in the file is moved by the number of seconds you enter, in one pass, with decimals allowed (2.5 = two and a half seconds later, -1.2 = 1.2 seconds earlier). Use it when subtitles were made for a different cut of the video, like a version with a longer studio logo at the start.
