How It Works
Upload Your DCM File

Decode and Window
DCMTK — the reference DICOM toolkit — decodes the pixel data and applies the window/level stored in the file (or an automatic one), mapping the scan's full measurement range to a viewable image.

An ordinary image with no embedded patient metadata, ready for viewing, email, claims, or printing. The original DICOM stays the medical record.
When to Convert, When to Keep the Original
Converted images are right for:
- Viewing your own scan without installing software
- Sending an image to family or a non-clinical recipient
- Insurance claims and legal documentation (PDF)
- Printing, presentations, and record-keeping
- Sharing without the header metadata that travels with DICOM
Keep the original DICOM for:
- Second opinions and anything a clinician will act on
- Measurements — pixel calibration lives in the header
- Re-windowing — JPG has lost the full bit depth
- Uploading to another hospital's system (PACS ingests DICOM)
- Anything where the image is evidence, not illustration
