When Do You Need to Convert SVG to JPG?

Converting SVG to JPG produces a fixed raster photograph-style image from vector artwork, for use where a small file matters more than sharp edges and where transparency is not needed.

What Happens When You Convert SVG to JPG

An SVG is a vector description, so it has to be rendered to a pixel grid before it can be encoded as JPEG. That fixes the resolution, and enlarging the result afterwards softens the edges. JPEG has no alpha channel, so any transparency in the SVG resolves against a solid background. The bigger consideration is suitability: JPEG compression is built for photographs and handles the flat colour and hard edges typical of vector artwork poorly, producing visible artefacts around lines and text.

Worth knowing before you convert

JPEG cannot store transparency, so the SVG's transparent background is flattened onto white rather than left clear. If you need the background to stay transparent, convert to PNG instead.

About SVG and JPG

.svgScalable Vector Graphics

image/svg+xml

SVG is an XML-based vector image format for two-dimensional graphics with support for interactivity and animation. Unlike raster images, SVG scales to any size without losing quality, making it ideal for logos and web icons.

.jpgPiped JPEG

image/jpeg

Stream of standard JPEG images sent via pipe.

Conversion Notes

Converting a vector SVG to raster JPG renders all paths, gradients, and text at a fixed resolution. The output is a pixel grid — infinitely scalable vector properties are lost. Choose the highest resolution suitable for your intended output size, as upscaling a raster image later introduces blurring.

Frequently Asked Questions

PNG in almost every case. Vector artwork is flat colour and sharp edges, which PNG stores exactly and JPEG blurs. PNG also keeps transparency.
