APNG is a file format that extends the PNG standard to permit animated images. It is conceptually similar to animated GIFs but supports 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency.

Conversion Notes

Image conversion from FITS to APNG preserves colour information and dimensions. If APNG uses lossy compression (such as JPEG), compression artefacts appear at lower quality settings — use quality 85+ to minimise visible loss. Transparency (alpha channel) is preserved in formats that support it; if the target format does not support transparency, transparent areas are filled with white by default.
