When Do You Need to Convert M4A to MP3?

M4A is what iTunes, Apple Music downloads, iPhone voice memos and most phone recorders produce, and it still trips up older car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and plenty of software. Converting M4A to MP3 gives you the one audio format that plays essentially everywhere.

What Happens When You Convert M4A to MP3

ffmpeg decodes the M4A and encodes MP3. What is inside the container matters for what you get. Most M4A files hold AAC, which is already lossy, so this is a second lossy pass and a small amount of quality goes with it. Some hold Apple Lossless instead, and those are lossless, so converting to MP3 discards considerably more. Either way the length, sample rate and channel layout carry across unchanged, and the first audio track is the one used.

Worth knowing before you convert

Converting cannot improve a poor source. A low bitrate M4A becomes an MP3 that sounds the same, whatever bitrate you choose.

About M4A and MP3

.m4aApple Lossless Audio Codec

audio/alac

ALAC is an audio coding format developed by Apple Inc. for lossless data compression of digital music. It allows audio data to be compressed without losing any information, unlike MP3 or AAC.

.mp3MPEG-1 Audio Layer III

audio/mpeg

MP3 is the most widely used audio compression format for music distribution. It reduces file size by removing frequencies less audible to the human ear. MP3 files are supported by virtually all audio players and devices, making them ideal for music sharing and streaming.

Conversion Notes

Audio conversion from M4A to MP3 re-encodes at the highest quality setting appropriate for the target format. Lossless-to-lossy conversion (e.g., FLAC to MP3) is a one-way process — converting back to lossless does not recover the discarded information. Metadata tags (title, artist, album, track number) are mapped to the closest equivalent fields in the target format.

Frequently Asked Questions

A little. AAC inside an M4A is already compressed, so encoding it again as MP3 removes a bit more. At sensible bitrates it is not something you would pick out on ordinary equipment, and speech is unaffected in practice.
